HAND SOAP: Liquid Castille soap comes in lots of scents. Keep those old foaming pumps. Add 1-2 Tbsp liquid castile soap and fill it up with water. Great foaming handsoap. Foaming soaps save money! There is less waste down the drain when kids put a full pump of soap on their hands and then don't even lather it before washing it down the drain -and their hands get cleaner! If you choose to use a commercial soap you can still reuse your foaming pump - just choose a clear soap (ie not a creamy soap) and put about 20% full of soap then fill the pump with water. Just swirl it around and you're ready to go.
For a moisturizing soap just make oat water by soaking 1/4 cup oats in 3 cups hot water for an hour or so - puree
in the blender and strain well. Use oat water instead of regular water. Use this in a foam soap dispenser with liquid castile.
A different moisturizing soap - so creamy and rich: use 1/4 cup full fat coconut milk (from the can) and press it through a sieve to make it creamy and not lumpy, 1/3 cup castile soap, and 1 tsp oil (avocado, grapeseed, jojoba or just plain old vegetable oil!). Use this in foam soap dispenser - fill about 25% full and fill with water. (to make this one dispenser at a time - its about 1 Tbsp of coconut milk, a bit more than 1 T of castile soap)
SHAMPOO - there are recipes for soap nut shampoo, baking soda shampoo, and castile soap shampoo. I haven't
tried the soap nuts but didn't like the baking soda and castile soaps for my hair. That does not mean that you won't love it
though! I currently use commercial shampoo but only use it about 1/week. The rest of the time I only rinse my hair. (If that sounds gross to you you would be the majority but the truth is your body becomes dependent on washing and just creates more oils for you to wash off! Less soaping means less oils!).
The above recipe for moisturizing soap with coconut milk was a recipe for shampoo but I found it left my hair greasy. Maybe with low fat coconut milk and no oil it would be good??
CONDITIONER: Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with water (ratio of 1:25-40). If you have dandruff - just leave it right on your scalp and you won't have dandruff anymore! It only smells like vinegar while its wet. After drying you don't smell anymore! I love this! It is also a great detangler!
TOOTHPASTE: I use straight baking soda about 50% of the time or more. I recently made this toothpaste and LOVE it! 2 of the 4 people in my home use it! The other 2 still use commercial toothpaste paste but there are Lots of options. Some I've heard of are baking soda (mixed with a bit of mint extract if you like the minty fresh!) or deactivated charcoal are two! (I mix baking soda with peroxide for a whitening toothpaste!)
Remineralizing Toothpaste
3 Tbsp coconut oil, melted
3 Tbsp baking soda
20-30 drops of essential oil (for flavour) I used wintergreen
1 mini scoop stevia
1/4 tsp xylitol
1-2 magnesium caplets
This paste will firm up as it cools. If it gets warm it will go liquid again.
BODY SCRUB:
This takes 5 minutes to make! You can put it in a jar with a lid ( just break a plastic spoon to fit inside) and keep it in the
shower!
Oil Free Scrub Moisturizing Scrub
1/2 cup sugar or salt (or mixture) 1/2 cup sugar or salt (or mixture)
(optional: orange peels dried and ground in coffee grinder)
1/4-1/2 cup oil
essential oils for scent
Instructions:
Mix it all, put it in a jar. done.
BODY BUTTER:
I started with this recipe (http://healthylivinghowto.com/1/post/2013/11/how-to-make-healthy-body-butter.html) but I
found it really oily - even after adding some tapioca starch. Next
time I'll leave out the coconut oil. Check out her link for the
healthy properties of the
ingredients!
1/2 cup shea butter
1/4 cup cocoa butter
(she recommends also 1/4 cup jojoba and it sounds great I just didn't have any so haven't used it!)
essential oils if desired
if you're concerned about mold / bacteria growth you can add tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract (not grapefruit essential oil)
Melt the oils until combined in a double boiler or microwave.
Refrigerate 1 hour until they are solid (if you're in a hurry you can put it in a larger pan so its thinner)
Whip the oils until creamy and fluffy like whipped cream
Put into clean containers and refrigerate again.
In normal conditions you should be able to keep it at room temperature after it has set.
Note: I have tinted this so it is like tinted moisturizer! I just add cocoa! It will look just like chocolate icing but will not be as dark on your skin! And I've added zinc oxide (non-nano particles so it doesn't absorb!) just 2 Tbsp to this recipe.
LOTION: There are some super easy to make lotions or you can buy just straight cocoa butter or shea butter
or straight coconut oil (or a mixture) Add some essential oils for a nice scent if you like! There are LOTS of recipes online. Here's my go to recipe.
1 part wax
1 1/2 parts liquid oil
1/2 part cocoa butter
1/2 part shea butter
Melt it all together and whip it while it cools. store in an airtight container.
This is a thick lotion - more like a body butter but nice and creamy!
(It is possible to add water to this recipe while you are whipping it and it will be creamy - but adding water is a finicky thing and then it molds if not used quickly)
LOTION BARS / MASSAGE OIL
BARS
4 Tbsp beeswax
2 Tbsp coconut oil
2 Tbsp liquid oil
essential oils for scent
Melt it all. Pour into molds (Dixie cups are a nice size - fill them about 1/2-3/4 cm deep)
LIP BALM:
Super easy and you can tint it any colour you want! You can use your old lip balm tubes, or use small pots -
you can even buy lip balm tubes on ebay really cheap!
1 part beeswax
1 part liquid oil
1/2 part coco or shea butter or coconut oil
(optional: Japanese mint oil for that nice tingle that Burts Bees has!)
Melt this all together. Pour (or use medicine syringe) to fill lip balm tubes. Cool.
if you want your lipbalm to have some colour you can add a little pure mineral make up (I use BYF Pure Mineral
Makeup). If you want it to be opaque or a darker colour just add a touch of cocoa to the mix! (note the colour in
the tube will look darker than on your lips.

GEL LIP GLOSS
Those cute lip glosses people give your daughter? make your own to refill! The tip usually slides off if you get a fingernail under the edge.
1/2 tsp cornstarch
1 tsp water
3/4 tsp sweet almond oil
1 tsp aloe vera gel (juice)
colour / flavour (extracts, pomegranate / beet juice)
I've only done this once - I thickened the cornstarch and water. Then thinned it with the oil and juice stirring well.
Next time I want to see if I can cook it with the oil and juice so its for sure not lumpy. The colour will go in better as you cook too.
